Black Transnational Biennale

Performance Festival at articule : Saturday, January 13, 2024, from 2 - 4 PM

articule is proud to partner once again with Af-Flux and host the Black Transnational Biennale for their second edition. We will be presenting performers Kim Ninkuru and storyteller Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre for a Storytelling Performances Festival on January 13th!

Kim Ninkuru is a multimedia artist born in Bujumbura, Burundi. In Canada since 2009, she has been living and working in Montreal and Toronto. Using video and sound performance, story-telling and installation work, she creates pieces that give her the chance to explore and express rage, love, desire, beauty, or pain in relation to her own body, mind and soul. Although her art is very personal, she is committed to speaking out about the liberation of black women and femmes everywhere. Her work heavily questions our preconceived notions of gender, race, sexuality and class. It is grounded in the firm belief that blackness is past, present and future at any given moment.

Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre, also known as Bòs Madichon, was born in 1977 in Cayes-Jacmel, in southeastern Haiti. A multi-faceted and versatile life experience has led him to express himself through poetry, theater, sculpture and cultural journalism, all the while playing an active role in the preservation and promotion of Haitian culture. As a writer, Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre has published three collections of poems in both Haitian Creole and French, making literary contributions in both languages. In addition, his collection of stories entitled "TIGRI" bears witness to his narrative talent and his ability to captivate readers with stories rich in culture and imagination. As well as his achievements as a writer, actor, director and active member of the Haitian theatre scene, Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre has founded cultural initiatives such as the Bibliothèque Arthur Mégis and the Résidences de l'Amitié, demonstrating his ongoing commitment to promoting the arts and literature in Cayes Jacmel and beyond. Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre continues to enrich the Haitian cultural landscape with his creativity and dedication, consolidating his place as a writer and key figure on Haiti's artistic and literary scene. As an actor, director and member of the "Nous Théâtre" troupe, led by writer and playwright Guy Régis Junior, Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre has made a significant contribution to the Haitian theater landscape. He is also an integral part of the Festival de Théâtre 4 Chemins, where his position as press attaché attests to his commitment and dedication to this major cultural event. As a director, he has staged such remarkable productions as Syto Cavé's "Kavalye Pòlka" and Frankétienne's "Kalibofobo", demonstrating his ability to highlight literary works through impactful theatrical performances. In 2020, Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre founded the Bibliothèque Arthur Mégis in Cayes Jacmel, in southeastern Haiti, offering a creative space and residency for local and international artists and writers. The library is also home to Résidences de l'Amitié, marking its ongoing investment in the promotion of the arts and literature. Jacques Adler Jean-Pierre continues to make his mark, as demonstrated by his role as guest of honor at major cultural events, including the Salon du livre de Mirebalais in 2022, consolidating his place as a key figure on the Haitian art scene.

Af-Flux - Black Transnational Biennale

Organizing a series of exhibitions, conferences and contemporary art activities dedicated to black artists in various locations in Quebec and Canada. Its mission is to bring together in a single large-scale event the work of Afrodescendant artists from the Americas and Europe, as well as African artists living outside the continent. The Biennale brings together established and emerging artists to open a transnational dialogue on contemporary art. The Black Transnational Biennale is a vital event in the promotion of Afro-descendant art in the Americas. An event such as the Biennale enables us to better understand diverse black identities, to explore their languages and aesthetics, and to put into dialogue and shed light on the issues that affect these communities through their cultures and artistic productions. These efforts will present Quebec, Canadian and international audiences with art that is plural, powerful and rich. Between biennales, the organization has the opportunity to promote, design and organize activities or exhibitions aimed at showcasing Afrodescendant works from here and abroad.
